The Pasifika Medical Association (PMA) kicks off its 20th Anniversary celebration conference next week 24-26 August at the Rendezvous Hotel in Auckland.
Founded in 1996, the PMA has made and continues to make a significant contributions to improving the health of Pacific people in the Pacific region.
Conceived in a parking lot with a small group of volunteers huddled around the boot of a car in 1996, the organisation has grown to over 3,000 members, which makes it the largest Pacific health network in the region.
PMA’s 20th Anniversary is an exciting milestone providing an opportunity for all its members and partners to reflect on its impact in communities and families in the Pacific region and as an organisation.
“It is a special achievement for PMA to reach the 20 year mark,” says PMA Chief Executive Debbie Sorensen.
“We will continue to share, learn, grow and connect.”
“The 20th Anniversary comes on the heels of a very successful journey. We look back at how PMA has developed from its humble beginnings 20 years ago and we also reflect where the organisation is heading in the future.”
PMA has made an enormous contribution to Pacific communities as the largest cohort of Pacific health professionals in the Pacific region, mostly doctors and nurses and senior administrators from many countries in the Pacific, including New Zealand.
The organisation has risen to become a highly visible advocate for disaster responsiveness and the training of New Zealand based health professionals and staff, including urban response and Police response to any emergency or crisis in the Pacific region.
“We have and continue to play a key role in helping to develop a Pacific health workforce, create career pathways for Pasifika students and improve the health and wellbeing of communities in NZ and across the Pacific,” says Mrs Sorensen.
The conference will honour former and current PMA members for continuing to make a positive difference to the health of their respective communities. It will cover exciting topics, including the role of Medical Councils and Associations in the Pacific, focusing how New Zealand can support the improvement in the registration and regulation of clinicians in Pacific countries, perspectives on Pacific leadership, women leading change and a session on kava as a commodity.
The publication booklet “20 Years of Successful Navigation – the Pasifika Medical Association Journey” will also be launched.
The anniversary dinner will announce the recipients of prestigious Life Membership Awards to acknowledge the service of some outstanding PMA members.
The Conference is intending for all Pacific medical practitioners to come together in one place to share ideas and information and discuss and debate key medical issues.
