Healthcare Heroes is a programme developed to support young Pacific students who are considering a career in healthcare.
The programme involves working with schools to support the academic success of young Pacific students and to support school based staff including science teachers, careers advisors and general staff members to guide young Pacific students into pursuing a health science career.
The programme offers mentoring, academic counselling, career events, science strengthening and meetings with parents, and 15 high schools are currently working with PMA on this programme.

Healthcare Heroes Study Guide
The Healthcare Heroes Study Guide will help you to make the best of your skills and prepare you for a great future in healthcare. It will help you achieve your academic goals through understanding how to study and to be prepared for assessments, tests and exams. Outlined are different methods and skills needed for effective studying.
The study guide aims to enhance your knowledge and increase your ability to achieve academically. Work through the guide, talk to your teachers, mentors and family about what you need to be a great learner. All in all, do not be afraid to ask questions, be prepared, stay motivated and remember it is not how much time you put into study it is about how you study and whether you have learned something in the end.
The Healthcare Heroes Careers Guide includes various healthcare jobs you can choose to pursue and what you’ll need to pass in NCEA to get there. Under NCEA it’s not just which subjects you should choose, it’s also about which NCEA standards to choose. Standards are important because they form your educational pathway through NCEA, and taking the right standards will help you stay on track to achieving your career goals or just allow you to keep your options open.
The best standards to take are achievement standards because they give you the opportunity to achieve at the highest level (at Merit and Excellence) and they most often lead to the approved standards you need at level 3. Approved standards are important not only for university entrance (UE) but also to get into your preferred health science course at university and to prepare you for the demands of university study.
